Make me laugh!
Well we just experienced almost 30 inches of snow this weekend. Lots of people are snowed in. Many are without power. Stores are closed and public transportation is not running. So there is a lot to grumble about. But in the middle of all of this, watching my dog frolic in the snow always makes me laugh. And it puts a smile on my face all day long.
Smiling
Smiling can change everything. When training receptionists, they were told to smile before they answered the phone. It changes their mood and the tone of their voice. Today, I was just listening to Wayne Dyer talk about smiling during his “Excuses Begone!” presentation. One of the things he suggested was to smile when you first wake up. It can change your day.
I’m going to do it. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know?
Is the cure for a scarcity mindset
Over the last week, I have been busy helping my daughter collect clothes for Haiti. It has continued to make me feel grateful for all I have. As I looked through my clothes, I didn’t realize how many clothes I had. Not just outerwear but pj’s, bras and shoes. Then there were the tee shirts from both my husband & me. As I went through clothes, I kept asking myself, how many of these do I really need? Would giving this make someone else’s life easier?
What I got in exchange
Aside from the most wonderful feeling, I also gained several unexpected benefits. For starters, I gained at least 3 empty shelves in the closet and decluttering didn’t end there. I also discovered that many of the spring & summer clothes I had were too big. (I’m doing the happy dance!) Asking the same questions, I gave the big winter clothes to the Goodwill. I think I have greatly decreased my scarcity mindset – the one that rears its ugly head when I am stressed. Most importantly, I realize that I can make a difference in the world.
I’ve learned abundance is a choice. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

Clean out your closet!
When I look at all I have, how could I possibly be afraid to give some away and help others. How many seasons have I taken clothes out of the closet and put them back? Why? Is it because I paid good money for them? Or they were a gift? Maybe it’s because I don’t have anything to match them. This is a great opportunity to clean out the clutter in your closet and give a gift that will warm you more than any clothes you have. Giving makes you wealthy!
It’s not too late to help Haiti with your summer & spring clothes. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.
Write them down
A funny thing happens when I write down my dreams and goals. A lot more of them will become real. It is important for me to get them out of my head and into the game of life. A long time ago, I admitted that I wanted to feel pretty and feminine. It seemed really vain and trivial. After I wrote it on paper, what I realized was that feeling that way did not negate the other important things in my life. I could have both.
Bring your dreams into your daily life
Dreams do not have time limits. You can have a piece of your dreams everyday. Do something that makes you think of them everyday. Make a vision board or share your dreams with others. It helps to bring your dreams to life. Make sure you nurture them and they see the light of day. They will grow and come to fruition soon than you think.
Whether it is food, exercise or career, ask yourself “How does this help me achieve my dreams?” What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know?
Comes Unexpected Consequences
A friend of mine just upgraded to unlimited minutes. I now talk to her twice as much each day than I did before. Nothing else changed. The unexpected consequences are now we spend more time on the phone and sometimes I have to say “Busy, can’t talk now.” The same dynamics of change and unexpected consequences can happen to help improve your lifestyle.
4 Small Chances
Here are 4 small but important changes that will help you with your weight loss and just make you feel better.
1. Eat breakfast within 1 hour of getting up. This kick starts your metabolism first thing. The unexpected consequence is that when you anchor in this meal, you start the day feeling like you did something good for yourself. This feeling will carry through your eating the whole day.
2. Eat 4-6 balanced mini-meals each day. By spacing out your body’s fuel, you burn it all day and do not have highs and lows. You will also never feel overly hungry and that cuts down on binging.
3. Have more than 10g of protein in all your meals. You should be getting 50 to 60 grams of protein a day. Protein is necessary for the building and repair of body tissues. It also regulates the body’s processes. If you are not getting enough protein while losing weight, your body is not at it’s best. You could also experience hair thinning.
4. Get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. When a person sleeps, the body and mind are working just as hard as when the person is awake. Besides reviving energy, sleep maintains chemical balances that create better moods, stabilize chemical imbalances, and even ensure that the body is working at its best capabilities to ward off disease and even obesity.
Did you notice that 2 of the changes had have nothing to do with what you ate but with behavior? What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

What is that noise?
Yesterday as I was sitting at my desk, I heard a strange noise. I thought it was the dog. It was in fact my stomach growling! Because I eat every 3-5 hears to keep from getting overly hungry, I haven’t heard or felt that sensation is quite a long time. It surprised me.
Made me remember
It made me remember when I first started losing weight for the last time; I didn’t know when I was hungry. I would eat if I was happy, sad or if I had a headache. There was transitional eating – I don’t know what I should be working on, so I’ll get something to eat. Then there was what I called the Chocolate Crisis.
How do you know if you are really hungry? Eating regularly every 4 hours can help. If you are hungry an hour after you ate a good meal, you have to ask yourself am I really hungry. I had to set my watch for 3.5 hours when I first started doing this. Be able to know the difference between hunger and a learned craving. You can enjoy a movie without junk food.
So what can you do to recognize hunger? What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

Are you a station wagon or a sports car?
If you think of yourself as a utilitarian station wagon, you may be happy putting economy or regular fuel in your tank. If you see yourself as a beautiful, sleek sports car, you want to put high-octane fuel in your car and take time to take care of it. So which are you?
Really?
I hope you didn’t say station wagon. We are all beautiful and unique sports models. We want the best food and care we can afford. So what is your optimal blend of fuel? How many calories do you need a day to support a high-energy healthy body? What is your mix of good fats, protein and carbs? Every time you make a food selection, make sure that it is a building block to good health.

Enjoy your life now!
Yesterday I was busy making progress on a project that seemed stalled. I was so excited as each email and phone call came in bringing me new information. Before I realized it, it was dinnertime. I wasn’t hungry. I had not even thought about food. I didn’t have time for boredom or emotional eating. I was ecstatic with what I was doing right then!
I had less time to eat.
My daughter told me the other day, she was going to volunteer so she could get out and have less time to eat. She’s a smart young woman. It made me think of things I had done in the past to help with night eating. The most successful was teeth whitening. Who wants to eat when your teeth feel and look so good? I started it again this week. (Drugstore.com has a sale on GO SMILE Advanced Formula B1, $28.99 reduced from $89.00. Best of all – no trays.) Polishing my nails worked but not as well. Going to bed earlier is a great one because it works for your beauty rest as well as your eating. What enjoyable activity can you add to your life that will give you less time to eat?

This time of year
January is the time of year when we get ourselves psyched up for change. Quotes do this for me quickly. They seem to capture what I am looking for. And they make me feel like others share those same feelings. A good quote is as true for health as it is for any other facet of your life.
Here they are
“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Napoleon Hill
“All great achievements require time.” Maya Angelou
“Failure doesn’t mean you are a failure… it just means you haven’t succeeded yet.” Robert H. Schuller
The difference between try and triumph is a little Umph! Unknown
Do you have a quote that keeps you going? What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.
