Fast food

I spent Saturday riding around with my family looking for houses to buy. Needless to say, I didn’t plan my food very well. So we ended up at a fast food chain for a pit stop and lunch. I haven’t been in one for a long time.  The first item I saw on the menu was over 1,000 calories! Thank you Philadelphia for now having a law that calories have to be listed at chain restaurants.

What to do?

Ideally, I should have planned better or picked a better restaurant. But I didn’t. So what then? The first thing I did was to stop looking at the combo meals. The French fries and soda were definitely not worth the calories. I ordered off the $1.00 menu. You can also check out the kid’s menu. The portions are smaller. And sometimes you can put together a much healthier meal. In my case, I cut calories from 670 calories for adult version  to  340 calories for the Jr. version. I could of done better, if I had gone on line before and decided which fast food places have better choices for me or planned what is the best to order in each place.

If nothing else, it reinforced that I do not want to spend possibly a full day of calories on this type of food. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

It never feels good.

When you are stuck or on a plateau, do you beat yourself up? You shouldn’t.  It is part of the process of change. It is really just a pause in the journey.

Think of it this way..

a)    You are adjusting to the new ways. You are in the push –pull of your new habits. Luckily, they are balancing out. This is way, way better than putting the weight back on.
b)    You are practicing maintenance.  If you have a couple of plateaus before you reach your goal, maintenance will be easy.
c)    This is a great time to focus on other parts of your life. You know the part that has nothing to do with weight loss.

What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know?

Makes healthy easier

When you are trying to make changes, it is easier to hang out with people that have those habits. I have a girlfriend that that likes to dance.  This is a habit I want to cultivate. So I told her, I would go whenever she goes. She is always actively looking for opportunities but now she knows she has a partner in crime. I go because I said I would and each time I have more fun.

Other ways this works

This works well when you are eating out with others. Watch what they order. It might surprise you. My healthy friend orders appetizers instead a main course for dinner. Then pace yourself with the person that eats the slowest. Notice what healthy people bring for snacks. This is a great way to try new things and pick up a new habit you like. Can you think of other ways to use this strategy?

So whom are you going to copy? What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

Soup, Salad, New Recipes

If you had family or friends over during the holiday, you probably have leftovers.  The easiest way to use them is in soups or salads. The good news is that both of these add vegetables, fiber and water. This makes these very healthy choices. It is also a chance to try new recipes like turkey chili or a stir fry.

Or Freezer

Don’t forget about your freezer. This is an easy way to have measured portions on hand for those times when you don’t want to cook. Soups freeze easily. And don’t forget you can freeze desserts too. Freeze those last pieces of cake in individual sizes. Then when you want a little something, you don’t have to buy anything.

Soup, salad, a new recipe or freezer are all good health strategies for leftovers. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

Getting healthy in 2010 is a process

As I look back on ’09, I am reminded that it happened with every decision. The total of our decisions is what got us where we are for good or bad.  Every decision we make now is part of the process of getting healthy.

It can take time.

What we fail to realize is that we grow healthier with every lesson we learn, not just with every pound we drop.  It took us years to get here. It may have happened slowly.  The goal is to have more good minutes, hours and days than bad. As the good and better out number the bad, the healthiness aspect in our life grows. So take it 1 decision at a time.

Have fun and know you will be healthier this time next year. What healthy choices will you make today or in 2010? Let me know?

There is nothing like a snowing day in December to put you in a giving mood.

If you could push a button and get all the way down to the weight you know deep down you’d REALLY like to be, what would you weigh?

Most people “lie” to themselves when they think about how much weight they’d like to lose. They say ‘I’d like to lose 15 or 20 pounds”. What are these?

They are greens! Here is the importance of eating greens. They are rich in beta-carotene, foliate, and vitamins C, E, and K, which help protect against free radicals (unstable oxygen molecules that can damage cells). These greens may help maintain good health by reducing your risk of heart disease, some cancers, and several other illnesses. The US Department of Health and Human Services recommends consuming at least three cups of dark-green vegetables per week.

The Best Greens for You

Eating a wide variety of vegetables will help you get the nutrients you need and eat more than just three cups of them. Here are 7 great greens:
* spinach
* broccoli
* kale
* Swiss chard
* romaine and red-leaf lettuce
* bok choy
* brussels sprout

I’m happy to know that I am eating 6 out 7 of these. What greens are you eating? What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.
