On Tuesday, December 15th, I will be featuring Nina East, founder of  www. PersonalGrowthPrincess.com on the my Blog Talk Radio show “I’m Ready 4 Me”.

Join me as I interview Nina about the most common mistakes people make when they “do” personal development, and how most personal growth books and seminars actually set you up to feel WORSE about yourself.  Nina is a personal growth expert, published author, and the founder of PersonalGrowthPrincess.com – a site providing self-help book summaries for smart, busy women.

Thinking about your New Years Resolution?

Think you need more than a New Year’s Resolution? A Life Resolution will carry you farther. This is the 3rd part in the  series  New Years Resolution or Life Resolution. Nina East will be sharing information on how to ensure successful follow-through and making decisions that stick.

Information, alone, isn’t enough. You need Activation, Motivation, and Evaluation to be successful. In Part 1 & 2, we talked about how you want to be and how you can make changes. You can downloads this series at www.blogtalkradio.com/imready4me.

Feeling out of it

I admit I was feeling down and a little sorry for myself. I wanted something. Translation – I wanted comfort food and I was hungry.  I stopped at a really good supermarket. One that is not close to my home. This is usually the recipe for disaster. Luckily, what makes this market good, is it has many healthy options.

What happened

I was thinking I needed a kick in the butt, but I was pleased when I looked in my cart. I treated myself to quiche, a Caribbean lime rotisserie chicken, chicken chili and Clementines. It is not a huge victor but an affirming experience. It means that I can make healthy choices even when I am tempted not to.

It means that if I keep making healthier and healthier choices, I will be thinner, and more energetic. Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. Thoughts are things! And powerful things at that, when mixed with definiteness of purpose, and burning desire, can be translated into riches.” I include health as one of my riches.

I believe I am a healthy shopper. If you think you can, you can. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

Need extra storage?

If you have empty suitcases, then you may have extra storage.  What does this have to do with weight loss? If you are like me, then you have several sizes of clothes for every season. And now that the holidays are near, you can expect more clothes. This is a great time to create extra space and a better sense of your new sexy, healthy style.

Take an easy step

First get rid of the clothes you will never use even if you get to be “that” size. Stop saving them when there are plenty of people that can use them now. My sister says giving things away makes her feel rich.  Or you may decide to turn your extras into cash on eBay or at a consignment shop.  Or do both things.  Whatever you do, be sure to get rid of the items that are too big.  Believe you will not gain the weight back.

Then decide how you want to organize your stored clothes. Will it be by size or season? My body seems to lose inches in strange ways.  I have 3 suitcases.  The first 2 are organized by season with current or next smaller sizes. The third suitcase has things that are I will not use for a year or for special occasions. When I order on on-line, if I’m in doubt I go smaller. This affirms to me that I am getting smaller. However you decide to organize the suitcases, be sure to label them on the outside. I also use space bags so I can get more in. Then when I need the suitcase, the clothes still take up only a small space.

Doing this will clear space in your closet for your new clothes and help you to develop that exciting thin style. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know?

No joking!

No matter how much we plan, something always happens. It’s like someone is playing a joke on us. I once heard trying to have control described as trying to hold something tight in your hand. The harder you try to hold on, the more gets squeezed out. The best you can do is to set your priorities.

Dead Reckoning

I love this term. It is the process of calculating your position in order to keep on course. When you set your #1 priority, you control the outcome of your day. That’s because you have determined in advance the most important and rewarding thing you will accomplish before the day is done.  Then you get it done.

Today I decided to make exercise my priority. I gave myself a list of 3 exercises that I could do during my day (stretching, walking the dog & the vibration plate). I may only spend 10-15 minutes doing them but they add up. I stretched first thing this morning and it felt great.  I just returned from walking Monk. Tomorrow I am going to add a workout program. What one thing will you do today to advance your most important goal?

It helps to have a priority as a dead reckoning. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

Call me Crazy but….

I just realized that I have spent hours this week measuring and special mixing food for Monk, my puppy. He is has been sick:-(  I never spend this much time doing this for myself! In the end, I put Monk on rice and bananas and extra walks. Oh, I’ve heard pumpkin is also good for dogs and people. I put it on my shopping list.

What is wrong with this picture?

As I think about this, I realized that I know what the portion sizes are for my standard food. Over the years I have found dishes that are the right size for the food I’m eating. That way I don’t have to measure every time. Every couple of months, I recheck so I don’t develop portion creep.

But the really big difference, I’m a shame to say, is I rarely make myself this big of a priority. I was on-line looking up articles, changing meal times, size and content. What ever it took. Now granted, cleaning up running puppy poop is a VERY big motivator. Maybe we all need to ask, “What are my VERY big motivators?

What actions am I willing take to make sure I am getting the results I want? What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

Look at the big picture first

As we design our healthier lifestyles, we sometimes get stuck on the minutia like counting, weighting and measuring.  When this happens, it is a good idea to take a step back and look at the big picture. Let’s start with the ingredients we use.

Start with the ingredients

You can count and measure each meal all you want. It will be a lot easier if the individual ingredients you use meet your criteria for healthy. For example, how much fat, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, and etc do you want in your diet?  If your goal is to have less than 30% fat, using products that have close to 30% makes good sense.  Reading the labels can help you make healthier choices. If you want to increase your fiber, make your next selection have a higher fiber content that the last.

This will not work on all ingredients or some of our must-have favorites. But this can be fixed when you put the meal together. You can balance the fat by using low fat carbs like vegetables or lower salt intake by increasing spices. So use ingredients that meet your larger criteria, then balance each meal. Take one more step back and balance your day.

A Penny Saved

I’ve been noticing pennies in the street. I’ve been watching one in particular for almost a week. It got me thinking because my father took his counting change jar to the bank and had $103 dollars unexpectedly saved.

The Penny Lady

It also made me think of a woman who attended my money management class. She made a game out of collecting pennies with her children. They collected them from everywhere and everyone.  Once a month they took their haul to the bank. They took a small amount as a reward and divided the rest into the  children’s saving account. They averaged over a $100 a month.  You can accomplish more than you think , a little at a time,  if you are focused and keep going.

What if pennies were calories? We don’t think much of small amounts of change or calories. Did you know it only takes burning an extra 10 calories a day for a year to lose 1 pound?  Make a game out of it. Reward yourself. Have fun.

All change adds up. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

My  Review

Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday season. I had a good weekend. So I had to think about what went right and what I could improve.  I had a chance to spend time with parents, children and grandchildren.  Even my eating went pretty well. By that, I mean I savored lots of great dishes and didn’t over do.

What needs improvement?

What I didn’t do well with was my medications. I didn’t plan ahead. The good news is I’m much more active than I was before. I had planned on returning home between visits. But when the chance came up to stop by friends, I did.  But I also didn’t have any medication with me. This happened to me not once but 3 times! DUH! Because of all the activity, I didn’t realize this until today.

Take time to review your holidays so you can do better in December. What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know.

What do you want?

Holiday shopping can be stressful. And sometimes we forget about ourselves. I would like to suggest you ask for gift certificates.  As you lose weight, exercise or take up new activities, you will need new stuff.  What better way to reward yourself for all your good work?

What have you always wanted?

Get things that will move you forward into the new you.  This is a great opportunity to try new experiences like a massage, laser hair removal, a personal trainer, lessons, a vacation or that special thing that you always felt guilty about purchasing.  To make it easy, ask for gift certificates from just 2 or 3 stores or a Visa card that can be used anywhere.

The good news is gift certificates are always the perfect size and color! What healthy choice will you make today? Let me know?
